Circa- Early 19th Century
Background-
The strong geometric lines, particularly the horizontal gold stripes, are highly characteristic of the Art Deco movement (roughly 1920s-1930s) which emphasized sleekness, symmetry, and modernity. This aesthetic then transitioned and often softened into the Mid-Century Modern style (1940s-1960s), which continued to appreciate clean lines and bold colors.
The gold decoration is likely applied through a process of gilding or enameling. Gilding involves applying thin layers of gold, while enameling uses powdered glass melted onto the surface. Both methods, when well-executed, result in durable and lustrous patterns. The precise, even lines suggest skilled craftsmanship.
The set includes a decanter, lidded jar, 2 goblets, & a tray. They are designed to serve both aesthetic and utilitarian purposes. The crystal & gold suggest a luxury set for aristocratic & affluent bourgeois households.
Sets like this were common on ladies dressing tables or boudoirs during the first half of the 19th Century.
