Background-
The Louis XVI style emerged during the reign of King Louis XVI in France and is a prime example of Neoclassicism. It marks a departure from the more ornate Rococo style, embracing a more restrained and symmetrical aesthetic.
Like the Regency style, Louis XVI drew heavily from ancient Greek and Roman art and architecture. Common motifs include straight lines, geometric shapes, fluting, and classical ornaments like acanthus leaves, rosettes, and Greek key patterns.
While luxurious, the ornamentation is generally more delicate and refined than in earlier styles. Carving is often shallow and precise.
