Background- 

Louis XIV ruled France from 1643 to 1715, he was known as the 'Sun King'. His era is associated with absolute monarchy and a period of strong french power in Europe. It was a time of great cultural and artistic flourishing. 

This period in France, the most popular classical motifs representations were 

  • Acanthus Leaves: The scrolling acanthus leaves are a common decorative element in classical architecture and design. 
  • Urn: The vase-like element at the top is a typical classical urn, often used as a decorative finial.   
  • Female Mask: The central female mask is a common feature in neoclassical design, often representing a goddess or allegorical figure. & Rossette. 

This is kind of the classical mixed media style. These two sconces are great examples of this style.
