These rugs were not only utilitarian, but also culturally symbolic, woven by nomadic or village communities for household use, often passed down generations. Their geometric abstraction is distinct from the Persian curve-linear styles. Emphasizing tribal identity & iconography.
Bordjalou Kazakh rugs are characterized by bold. octagonal medallions (commonly called 'GULS') symmetrically placed on a red field. The octagonal motifs often derive from Turkic tribal symbolism.
The simplistic, powerful use of space, primary colors, and heavy outlines are indicative of a tribal and nomadic style rather than a city weave.
A hand-knotted wool on wool rug made with natural vegetable dyes.
This carpet features a more open red field with three distinct, elongated octagonal or lozenge-shaped medallions arranged horizontally across the center. These medallions are primarily blue and contain geometric motifs.
There's a prominent inner border with a repeating star-like motif and a larger outer border with a more complex geometric pattern that includes hooked elements and possibly stylized floral or geometric abstractions. The arrangement and specific patterns of the borders differ from the other two rugs. This rug has a more spacious feel in the central field due to the large expanse of red and the distinct, separated medallions. The horizontal arrangement of the central elements also gives it a different visual flow.
