These candle-holders were designed to resemble a tree trunk with with detailed bark and root spreading at the base. The flowing, organic lines and naturalistic motifs are reminiscent of the Art Noveau movement. It was popular from the 1890s to around 1910. This style emphasized curves and nature-inspired forms .
The exaggerated root base and knotted 'face-like' bark textures also echo fantasy or gothic influences, possibly evoking a mythical or enchanted tree. The wood effect in bronze was especially popular among artists influenced by nature, symbolism, like those working in the circles of 'Emile Galle' or Hector Guinard.
France was a central hub of Art Nouveau's decorative arts especially in Bronze, glass & ceramics.
