Background-

During the 8th Century, before the proliferation of electricity, chamber candlesticks were designed to be portable for carrying around the house to light one's way to the bed-chamber. Chamber candlesticks were designed to carry a short candlestick and always had a pan to catch dripping wax. Although electric lighting has phased out candles, they are still used in homes as decorative elements or to add atmosphere on special occasions.

Christofle is a highly esteemed French silversmith and manufacturer of fine tableware, jewelry, and home accessories. Founded in Paris in 1830 by Charles Christofle, the company quickly gained a reputation for innovation and quality.

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Christofle became a preferred supplier to royal courts, including that of Emperor Napoleon III, and to the most affluent families across Europe and beyond. Owning a piece by Christofle signified taste, wealth, and an appreciation for fine craftsmanship.

Christofle's designs have spanned various stylistic periods, from Neoclassical and Romanticism in their early years to Art Nouveau and Art Deco, and contemporary styles. This relatively simple octagonal taperstick likely reflects a more classical or restrained aesthetic popular in the earlier to mid-19th century or a later return to such forms.
