Background:
This elegant demilune (half-moon) console table is a beautiful representation of the Louis XVI style, a neoclassical movement that emphasized symmetry, straight lines, and classical motifs, moving away from the preceding Rococo extravagance.
The console table shows several hallmarks of refined craftsmanship from the late 18th Century. The demilune shape is typical of the era.
Key characteristics include the fluted, tapered legs, the rectangular stretcher base, and the prominent use of classical ornamentation. This piece is lavishly adorned with exquisitely carved giltwood elements, such as hanging floral or laurel swags, an urn or vase motif in the center, and classical rosettes. The rich, varied marble top, often Breche marble with its mix of colors, provides a luxurious and durable surface. Console tables of this design were typically placed against a wall, often beneath a mirror, in grand entryways, hallways, or reception rooms, adding a touch of refined classicism and opulence to the interior.
